Jaya tax blow to car owners

Chennai, March 21: Bad times are in store for cellphone toters, car owners and cable operators in Tamil Nadu: the Jayalalithaa regime has rolled out an assortment of taxes that is bound to pinch their pockets, reports our special correspondent.

Armed with a Supreme Court order, finance minister C. Ponnaiyan today slapped a 12.5 per cent tax on phone rentals “collected by BSNL and other private operators, including the rentals on mobile telephones”, which will be passed on to both fixed and mobile phone users.

Ponnaiyan also introduced a “compulsory compounding system of taxation” for cable television operators.
