Court prod on Victoria

Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the secretary and curator of Victoria Memorial Hall to file an affidavit stating what steps they had taken to protect the monument from pollution. The court also asked the management what plans it had chalked out to implement the recommendations of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute to protect the Memorial.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Subhas Dutta, alleging that lack of maintenance was ruining the Memorial. Dutta said the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, too, had sought a study on the status of the marble and sandstone used in the monument.
