Raj Kumar

Chennai, March 12: Kannada icon Raj Kumar, abducted by Veerappan two years ago and held hostage for 108 days, will undergo “joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee” because of the strain incurred at the time, reports our special correspondent.

The “prolonged strain” during captivity, when Raj Kumar was made to walk long distances — sometimes over 40 km a day — has caused his hips and knees “to wear out”, said Dr P.V.A. Mohandas, who heads the prestigious MIOT Hospitals.

The actor was admitted to the hospital today for the surgery.

Raj Kumar was in pain since his release by Veerappan. His left hip “is now completely worn out” and will be replaced by a surgery tomorrow morning, the doctor said. His knees would also have to be replaced, he added.

The icon will have to spend at least 10 days in hospital, post-surgery.
