Strike threat from contract carriages

Members of the West Bengal Contract Carriage-Owners’ and Operators’ Association have threatened to go on a two-day strike from March 24 to protest various government decisions, including a hike in permit fees and road tax. Association general secretary Himadri Ganguly said to signal the agitation launch on March 13, members will halt their buses for 15 minutes from 9.30 am and later submit a memorandum to transport minister Subhas Chakraborty.

Water plant inauguration

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will inaugurate the South Raipur water treatment plant at Budge Budge, in South 24-Parganas, on Tuesday. The plant will be the first phase of the surface water-based supply scheme in the arsenic-affected areas of South 24-Parganas. Central rural development minister Annasaheb Patil will be present.

Highrise blaze

A fire broke out in a highrise at Bapuji Nagar, in Jadavpur, around 5 pm on Sunday. Firemen fought for an hour to douse the flames. The fire broke out in one of the apartments and spread to the others. No one was injured, but property worth several lakhs was destroyed.

Airhorns seized

A major drive against airhorns in vehicles was conducted by the police in Salt Lake and VIP Road over the weekend. Ajay Nand, additional superintendent of police, Salt Lake, said cases were filed against 65 vehicles. A large number of airhorns were seized.

Partymen clash

At least 10 houses were damaged at Rajarampur, in Bishnupur, on the southern fringes of the city, in a clash between CPM and Trinamul Congress activists. A dozen supporters of both parties were injured.
