Loot-rape accused in court

Ranaghat (Nadia), March 6: Two of those arrested for the Dhantola incident from Burdwan’s Kalna told the sub-divisional magistrate here that no one from Ainsmali was involved in looting the passengers or raping women of the two buses returning from wedding receptions.

Putu Sardar and Parimal Sardar, who were brought here from Kalna today, were remanded in police custody for five days. Kamal Sardar, who was arrested following a tip-off from Putu and Parimal, and 16 others picked up in Nadia earlier were remanded in jail custody.

“We and seven others raped the women and fled with the cash and ornaments,” Putu told the court, pointing at Parimal.

Assistant public prosecutor Kalachand Bhawal said the duo told court no one from Ainsmali was part of the gang. But 18 of those arrested so far for the loot-rape incidents are from there.
