Health centre power cut

Mandirbazar (South 24-Parganas), March 4: The West Bengal State Electricity Board disconnected supply to the block’s primary health centre on Thursday, accusing it of drawing power illegally for a decade.

The centre was drawing power from a nearby transformer for the past 10 years, said an official.

The move has left villagers in the lurch as the centre provided treatment to more than 500 patients every day and accommodation to some of its doctors and nurses. Most of its stock of medicines that require refrigeration, particularly snake-bite serum and anti-rabies vaccine, has been taken away.

District medical officer of health Pradeep Mondal said the matter had been brought to the zilla parishad’s notice but the power board had asked for Rs 1 lakh for a separate transformer.
