Punjab beat Bengal

Chennai: In a match that went to the wire, Maharashtra won by a brace against Railways, while Punjab defeated Bengal in their first round robin match in the limited overs championship here Saturday.

In the match between Punjab and Bengal, the former opted to bat and posted a total of 247 for eight in 50 overs. Harvinder Jugnu (55), Pankaj Dharmani (22), Reetinder Singh Sodhi (41), Ravneet Rickey (32) and Amit Uniyal (31 not out) chipped in with useful scores for Punjab.

Spinners Sourashish Lahiri (three for 49) and Rohan Gavaskar (2/54) were the main wicket takers. Despite Gavaskarís unbeaten 77 (2x4 -2x6), Bengal made 194 for 9 in 50 overs.

Medium pacer Vineet Sharma (3/30) and left arm spinner Navdeep Singh (3 for 30) shone well with the leather for Punjab.
