Shekhawat falls ill in Chennai

Chennai, March 1: Last evening, a spinal problem prevented chief minister Jayalalithaa from going to the airport to receive Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on his first visit to Chennai after assuming office.

This morning, Shekhawat, who is staying at the Raj Bhavan during his two-day visit to the city, suddenly developed high blood pressure.

All his engagements till noon were cancelled. Shekhawat’s personal physician has said the illness was a result of “hectic routine”, the Vice-President’s secretary said in a statement. Shekhawat was advised rest, but his condition is now normal, the statement added.

Shekhawat will go ahead with his main engagement in the city this evening of participating in the birth centenary celebrations of the late classical dancer and social reformer, Rukmini Devi Arundale, at the Kalakshetra in Adyar.
