Pak claims 9/11 catch

Islamabad, March 1 (Reuters): Pakistan said it today arrested the suspected mastermind behind the September 11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, in what the US hailed as a major triumph in the global war on terror.

US officials said the arrest of Mohammed, self-proclaimed head of the military committee of Osama bin Laden’s al Qaida network, was the biggest catch yet in US President George W. Bush’s war on terror.

“He is the kingpin of al Qaida,” Rashid Qureshi, spokesman for Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, said.

“He’s the seniormost al Qaida guy to be captured yet,” said a senior US official.
