PM puts off speech after eye trouble

New Delhi, Feb. 27: An eye ailment forced Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to put off his scheduled reply in the Lok Sabha today to the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address.

The Business Advisory Committee revised the schedule listing the reply for Monday, after Vajpayee complained of eye strain.

Parliamentary affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said Vajpayee will reply in the Lok Sabha on March 3 and in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The rescheduling of Vajpayee’s reply may enable him to clarify the Centre’s stand on Ayodhya, a discussion on which began today under Rule 193. As a result of the rescheduling, the all-party meeting to have been convened by Vajpayee on the women’s reservation Bill on March 3 has been postponed to March 6.

The discussion on the railway budget will be taken up on March 4 and 5 while the debate on the general budget has been scheduled for March 6, 7 and 10, Swaraj said. Finance minister Jaswant Singh is expected to reply to the debate on March 11.

Short discussions on the atrocities on Dalits and the drought in the country have been scheduled for March 12 and 13.
