Mobile war: now call cell, talk free

As GSM and CDMA players vie for market share, it’s time for customers to reap beep benefits. After rolling out longer-term packages that can match Reliance's offerings, the city’s two private cellular operators — Airtel and Hutch — announced free incoming calls for pre-paid and post-paid connections on Thursday.

For existing Hutch post-paid customers, migration to the new scheme will be completed within five days and for Airtel subscribers, the facility will be available from the next billing cycle.

“With this scheme, customers can avail of the superior benefits of GSM technology which will help expand the market and increase mobile penetration,” explained Deepak Gulati, chief executive officer, Bharti Mobitel.

With pre-paid connections, existing Hutch users can avail of all free incoming calls plus a free bonus Talktime of Rs 50 from their next recharge. The scheme will be the same for Airtel pre-paid customers.

“It has always been our endeavour to provide our consumers with pioneering and best possible offers and we continue with that,” asserted Sunil Sood, chief operating officer, Hutch.
