Salman, Padma still ‘in love’

London, Feb. 27: Salman Rushdie and his actress girlfriend, Padma Lakshmi, are still “very much together” and “in love”, the couple said in a joint statement to The Telegraph.

British newspapers reports had suggested that the couple had split up.

Rushdie returned recently to New York after spending nearly two months in London, working closely with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of Midnight’s Children. The play is about to transfer to Michigan and New York, following a successful run at the Barbican.

Padma Lakshmi had spent the winter months in Mumbai, where she was working on an Indian film.

In their statement, the couple said: “We are still very much together as a couple. When two people both have demanding careers as well as many personal responsibilities, it often becomes difficult to spend as much time together as one would like. Perhaps that is where the speculation about our separation stems from.

“The stories in the British tabloids, which were then picked up by Indian newspapers, are untrue. We have never spoken out against one another, publicly or otherwise. We remain unified and in love.”
