Telecom official abducted

Imphal, Feb. 20: Militants abducted the deputy general manager of the Imphal telecom circle, J. Lungkim, from Thoubal district of Manipur on Tuesday but it wasn’t until today that news of the incident reached the state capital.

Lungkim was going to a relative’s house at Molnom village under Yairipok police station with his family when a group of armed men waylaid the vehicle and whisked him away.

A senior police official claimed that the abducted telecom official’s family had yet to file an FIR, but unofficial sources said a case had been registered at Yairipok police station and a rescue operation was underway.

The identity of the militant outfit behind the abduction and the motive are not known.

A deputy manager of the Food Corporation of India office in Dimapur town of Nagaland had been taken hostage by suspected militants last month. He was freed after a huge ransom was paid, sources said.

The official was abducted when he was on his way to the border town of Moreh along with some colleagues.

In another incident yesterday, militants ambushed an army team at Jiribam in Imphal East, bordering Cachar district of south Assam. Five members of the army unit were injured in the attack, state director-general of police S. Bimolchandra said.

The army personnel were attacked while they were patrolling the area. They retaliated immediately and the exchange of fire lasted several minutes.
