Trade hub fire probe

The government has ordered a probe into Monday’s fire that gutted large portions of a landmark building on Strand Road, in the city’s central business district. R.K. Prasannan, principal secretary, West Bengal fire services, said on Tuesday that an expert committee would ascertain the cause of the fire, that “prima facie appeared accidental”.

Unveiling plans to improve fire services, Prasannan said the entry-age bar on fire operators and sub-officers would be lowered, educational requirements raised, recruits put on a six-month “certificate course in professional fire-fighting” and fire stations would come up at Bantala and Diamond Harbour.
