Bus rolls on to field, four dead

Labhpur (Birbhum), Feb. 18: Four passengers were killed when a crowded bus travelling between Sundipur and Marut overturned and fell on a roadside field here this morning.

Three youths died on the spot. Another person died at Ahmedpur Hospital. Two of the victims were identified as Asis Bagdi, 22, and Bhanu Sen, 35. About 35 people were injured.

“The speeding bus, which left Sundipur at 8:15 am, lost control after crossing the Chouhatta Bridge, overturned and rolled down the roadside embankment into a field,” said sources at the Labhpur police station.

Bhaskar Mukherjee, a local shopkeeper, said: “The bus was over-crowded. There were people on the roof as well. It was trying to overtake a truck when a tractor from the opposite direction came in front of it. The bus went out of control.”

Villagers rushed to help the victims and called the police.
