Ash’s Darcy buzz around Depp

London, Feb. 18: Unconfirmed reports currently doing the rounds in London are that Hollywood star Johnny Depp is to appear opposite Aishwarya Rai in the role of Darcy in director Gurinder Chadha’s Bollywood version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

The 39-year-old American actor shot to fame with Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 and has made over 40 films to date, including What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. He is due to appear as author J.M Barrie in the forthcoming film, Neverland, alongside actress Kate Winslet.

Depp is sometimes considered to be a wild child of Hollywood and is known to have dated some beautiful women, including model Kate Moss. When he appeared as the lead in Edward Scissorhands, he fell in love with co-star Winona Ryder and the couple were engaged for three years.

Depp, with his dark good looks and lean cheekbones is ideally suited as Darcy. In fact, one of his co-stars, Christina Ricci, who appeared with him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow and the Man Who Cried, described him as “the coolest guy ever”.

Ricci is reputed to have said: “The impact Johnny has on people is amazing to watch. Forget the women — even the guys follow him around. He’s the coolest guy ever. And to those people who think I’m cool, I’d like to point out that I haven’t slept with someone as cool as Kate Moss, like Johnny did. But he’s strictly off limits to me. He’s married and that rules him out.”

Depp is married to French singer Vanessa Paradis and the couple have two children. He is an exception in Hollywood, as he also known as a director and musician.

He wrote and directed, The Brave, a story about a down and out American Indian, who is offered vast sums of money to appear in a snuff movie.

He was an aspiring rock musician, before he became an actor, and got the chance to play the guitar in Chocolat.

Depp also owns a club, The Viper Room in LA, and River Pheonix died outside this club. He is reputed to own a trendy bar in London, called, The Column.

Fashion designer Bubs Mahil has been picked to make the costumes for Aishwarya, who appears in the role of Elizabeth Bennett.

Bubs, who runs a retail outlet, Chiffons, in London’s Green Street, was picked by the director and producer, Deepak Nayar. Her other high-profile clients include British Prime Minister Tony Blair — he wore her Nehru jacket in India — and his wife, Cherie Blair.
