Churchill, Vasco in 1-1 draw

Margao: Vasco SC came from behind to hold Churchill Brothers to a 1-1 draw in an OIL PSU National Football League match at the Nehru Stadium here on Monday.

Churchill, who beat Vasco in the first leg, held the initiative in the early part of the match and surged ahead in the 13th minute. Defender Franky Barreto failed to clear the ball off a Yusif Yakubu lob into the box. Ratan Singh volleyed home from close.

Vasco slowly regrouped in the latter part and found the equaliser in the 38th minute.

Defender Sanjay Parte, overlapping down the left, relayed the ball to Rui Wanderley who sent a measured cross to Jules Alberto inside the box. Jules found the far end of the net with an angular drive.

The draw has left Churchill with 21 points from 14 matches. Vasco took their tally to 24 from as many matches.

After the change of ends, both teams squandered some chances to take the lead.
