Four arrests bust fake passport ring

A racket in forged passports was busted at Calcutta airport on Sunday. Deputy commissioner of police, security control, P.K. Chatterjee, said officers at the Immigration counter noticed discrepancies in the passports of Dineshbhai Ramanbhai Patel, Ketul Ramanlal Patel, Samir Gungnathbhai Baret and Asghar Ali Momin and arrested them late on Saturday. Police are on the look-out for an agent, known as Vicky, who had brought the four to the city from Ahmedabad on Friday. Initial investigations revealed that agents in Ahmedabad had helped the four obtain fake passports. “The quartet boarded a train and, accompanied by a few others, reached Calcutta. They were on their way to Canada through Singapore. We have alerted Ahmedabad police. The four are currently in police custody,” the deputy commissioner added.

Wanted goon in cop net

Pandit Jha, wanted in several cases of extortion, murder and dacoity, was arrested in Lake Town on Sunday, additional superintendent of police Ajay Nand said. Acting on a tip-off, the police surrounded a house in which Jha was hiding and rounded him up.

Police medals

Manoj Malaviya, Suman Bala Sahoo and Sivaji Ghosh are among the senior IPS officers awarded a police medal for meritorious service this year. The medal is awarded to IPS officers on completion of 15 years of service.

Bus mishap

Fifteen passengers returning home from Digha were injured when the CSTC bus in which they were travelling collided with a lorry at Beltala, in Howrah, on Sunday morning. The bus was carrying about 38 passengers from Digha. The injured were discharged from hospital on Sunday evening. The driver was arrested and the bus impounded.
