Lakhs throng Sankardev fest in Sonari

Sonari, Feb. 14: Nearly two lakh devotees of Sankardev thronged the Chowlung Siu-ka-pha-Mohamanikya Samanay Kshetra at Abhaypur, some 6 km west of Sonari in Sivasagar district, to attend the 72nd annual session of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha.

Devotees from different parts of the states as well as from neighbouring Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal attended the third day’s session today.

The day’s programme unfolded with the unfurling of the sangha’s flag by its new president Padadhikar Mukheshwar Saikia.

A mammoth religious and cultural procession, showcasing different aspects of Sankardev’s life and works, was taken out.

The procession was led by four elephants. After visiting several parts of the town, the procession culminated at the Kshetra.
