Housewives harassed by Red Cross volunteers

Burdwan, Feb. 14: Four housewives were allegedly molested by Red Cross volunteers at a camp in Durgapur yesterday after their ligation operations.

Dharnas were held in front of the Indian Red Cross-run hospital in Durgapur today to protest yesterday’s incident.

District magistrate Manoj Agarwal, who is also chairman of the Red Cross Society here, said specific complaints against two volunteers — Dinabandhu Verma and Sandip Saha — were lodged with police. “Though the culprits are absconding, massive raids are being conducted,” he said. An inquiry has been ordered.

As the news spread, relatives of the victims and hundreds of others assembled near the hospital this morning, demanding “exemplary punishment” against those involved.

Officials said the housewives were allegedly harassed a little past 8 pm after they were shifted to the female ward by the volunteers following the operation. The two accused sent the five lady volunteers present there to take dinner. “The culprits took the opportunity of the absence of the lady volunteers,” the officials said.

Eleven other women are now undergoing post-operative treatment at the camp.
