Doordarshan

New Delhi, Feb. 10: National television broadcaster Doordarshan has a total viewership of 259 million and the private channels reach a fraction of that figure, information and broadcasting minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told a parliamentary consultative committee today.

Among the cable channels, Star Plus has the largest viewership with 54 million, Sony 41 million and Zee 36 million. The combined viewership of the cable channels totals 166 million.

According to the minister, Doordarshan News reaches 89.91 per cent of television viewers, Aaj Tak 5.47 per cent, Zee News 2.84 per cent, Star News 1.32 per cent, BBC 0.20 per cent and CNBC 0.13 per cent.

The minister told the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Information and Broadcasting that Doordarshan and All India Radio would make efforts to “to promote creativity so that development presentation also becomes entertaining”.
