Croatia upset United States

Zagreb: Croatia pulled off a major upset beating the United States in the first round of the World Group Davis Cup match at Zagreb Sunday. In the first reverse singles of the day, Ivan Ljubicic beat James Blake 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 to ensure an unlikely victory for the hosts.

Earlier, Saturday, injured Goran Ivanisevic paired up with Ivan Ljubicic to beat the American pair of James Blake and Mardy Fish 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In Bucharest: France bt Romania 4-1 (Nicolas Escude bt Gabriel Trifu 7-6, 4-6, 6-4; Fabrice Santoro lost to Victor Hanescu 6-1, 6-4.
