Jawan probe

Patna, Feb. 9 (PTI): Investigations into the death of army jawan Madhukar Sharma on February 4 at Paliganj in an alleged encounter revealed that the encounter was fake, police sources said today.

Patna superintendent of police (rural) Amit Kumar has found Paliganj officer-in-charge Vivekanand Singh and constable Sandeep Kumar guilty of killing Sharma. Kumar has ordered arrest of the policemen charged with criminal conspiracy, murder and fabrication of evidence.

, sources said.

In his report to senior police officers, including director general of police D.P. Ojha, Kumar said Sharma was shot dead from close range and in order to make the encounter appear genuine, a country-made revolver was kept at the spot.

The officer-in-charge and the constable have already been suspended and three other policemen of Paliganj police station have been shifted and asked to report to the police line, for their alleged involvement in the fake encounter, by the Patna (rural) SP.

A senior police official said a case has been registered and the guilty policemen would be arrested and prosecuted soon.

The dawn-to-dusk Patna bandh yesterday, which was called to protest against the killing of the jawan, a native of Akbarpur village under Paliganj police station, was marred by violence in which three buses were set ablaze and several vehicles damaged.
