D-Company detention buzz in Dubai

New Delhi, Feb. 3: Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brothers Noora and Mustaqim are believed to have been detained in Dubai, but officials in India could neither confirm nor deny the development.

Besides Dawood’s two brothers, three others — Iqbal Mirchi, Aftab Batki and Mohammad Dossa — are said to be among those detained in the emirate.

A senior CBI officer said the Intelligence Bureau has been asked to ascertain the veracity of the reports, which reached the investigative agency from Mumbai.

“We have also heard about their detention, but are yet to confirm the reports,” Mumbai joint police commissioner Javed Ahmed told PTI. But officials of the Intelligence Bureau said they would confirm the detentions only after receiving independent information from Dubai.

The names of the underworld operatives figure on the list of fugitives India gave to the United Arab Emirates when a team of officers went there a year ago.

No case is pending against Noora, but he is alleged to be the lynchpin of various extortion rackets in India. The CBI was unable to get Mirchi, who faces several criminal cases here, extradited from England a few years ago. Since then, he is said to have been hiding in the Gulf.

Relations between New Delhi and the UAE had come under a strain after Dubai police allowed another brother of Dawood, Anees, to leave the emirate on bail.
