Woman crossing road knocked down

A 50-year-old woman was knocked down and seriously injured by a speeding lorry at the intersection of Chetla Ghat Road and Alipore Road on Sunday afternoon. Police said Jaya Dutta was crossing the road when the lorry hit her. She was admitted to SSKM Hospital. The driver of the lorry fled in his vehicle.

Traffic chaos by cycle rally

At least 200 DYFI activists went on a bicycle rally on Sunday and held a meeting on the Park Circus Maidan. They reached the venue from Howrah, South and North 24-Parganas, causing snarls on major roads.

Pre-dacoity arrests

Burrabazar police arrested five criminals from Rabindra Sarani on Saturday night. Sheikh Sonu of Tiljala and four associates had assembled there to raid a house in the area. Revolvers and other sharp weapons were recovered from them.

Found shot dead

A youth named Chhotu, 24, was found murdered at Narayanpur, near Calcutta airport, on Sunday evening . Police said he had been shot from very close range by two unidentified miscreants, who fled on a motorcycle after the killing. Airport police station’s officer-in-charge said Chhotu was involved in petty crime, but inter-gang rivalry may have led to the murder.

Library jubilee

National Library is hosting ‘Metcalfe to Belvedere’, an exhibition to mark 100 years of the Imperial Library and 50 years of the National Library. R. Nagaswamy, former vice-chancellor of Kanchivaram University, inaugurated the exhibition on Saturday. The exhibition, displaying 105 pictures and documents on the history of the library, will continue till February 10 from 10 am to 5 pm daily.
