Bengal name Ranji team for Andhra tie

The Bengal team for the Ranji Trophy match against Andhra Pradesh starting on Saturday was announced on Thursday. All-rounder Sanjib Sanyal has been dropped and Prosenjit Ganguly included in his place. The Andhra team is scheduled to arrive on Friday.

Bagan win big

Mohun Bagan thrashed Wari by eight wickets in a CAB first division league match Thursday. Dibyendu Chakraborty (98) was the star of the show as Bagan cantered to victory.

Port player debarred

Sanjeev Pandey of Calcutta Port Trust was debarred for two matches by the cricket committee of the CAB for misbehaving in a match against Kumrtuli last week.

Two other players, Indranil Chakraborty and Shiladitya Majumdar, have been handed one-match bans.

Sourav super genius

Sourav Chakraborty (8) won the boys’ crown of the Wipro Super Genius chess meet being held at Gorky Sadan.

In spite of his loss to runner-up Joydeep Dutta (8) in the final round Thursday, Chakraborty won with a better progressive score. Mary Ann Gomes won the girls’ title while Kiran Manisha Mohanti came second.

St Xavier’s win

St. Xavier’s beat Apeejay School 2-1 in the ESPN Premier League junior cup tournament being held at the SAI grounds. Jeet Mitla and Boris Antenn scored for the winners while S. Zaheed scored the reducer for Apeejay.

St James’ bt BD Memorial 3-0; Birla High School bt Cathedral Mission 5-0.

Merchants’ squash

J. Thomas and Kankaria Group moved into the finals of the 49th Merchants’ Cup squash meet being held at the Racket Club. While J. Thomas beat Services (Eastern Command) 3-0, Kankaria Group thrashed TISCO 3-0.

Schools’ athletics

The 11th annual athletics meet organised by the South Calcutta District Sports Council will start at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium on Saturday. More than 2500 participants from 200 schools are scheduled to take part in the two-day meet.

Hockey camp

The 16th non-residential hockey coaching camp for the boys will start at the BHA ground from Saturday.

The camp will be on till June 30 on every Thursday and Saturday.

Postal cricket

The 16th All India postal cricket meet will start in the city from February 7.

Eighteen teams including Jammu and Kashmir Circle and the Army Postal Service team will also take part. The final of the five-day meet will be played at the Eden Gardens.
