Manohar adjudged best

Calcutta: Bengal’s Manohar Hussain, who won a gold, was adjudged the best pugilist in the national sub-junior boxing championships which ended at the South Calcutta Physical Culture Association ground on Tuesday.

Manohar beat Punjab’s Iybir Singh in the final of 42-45kg category for under-16 boys.

Aditya Prasad, Santosh Dom and Dhiraj Burman won a silver each for the hosts. In the final, Paramjeet Singh was completely outslugged by Santosh in the 45-48 category.

Aditya and Dhiraj were later included in the national team for the international boxing meet, starting in Delhi from February 4.

Meanwhile, Manipur emerged the overall champions with 41 while Delhi finished seven points behind them to become the runners-up.

Manipur bagged four golds and two silvers to push strong contenders Delhi, who got one silver less, to the second spot. Assam finished third with a kitty of three golds.

Maharashtra’s Mayur Paygude (under-13 section) was declared the best promising boxer of the tournament.
