Handicapped man run over at Behala

lWithin 24 hours of the death of a schoolboy, a 45-year-old physically challenged man died in an accident in Behala on Thursday evening. The accident occurred when a private bus hit Anup Kumar Dey, a telephone booth-owner, while he was trying to cross the road near the Behala tram depot, police said. Dey died on the spot. Later, residents put up a roadblock protesting rash driving and demanding the arrest of the driver who had fled, leaving the bus behind. On Wednesday, Susmit Mondal, 13, was killed on his way to school.

Walk and talk for Netaji

The 105th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was observed in several pockets of the city on Thursday. Netaji Krishti Kendra, a cultural organisation, held the celebrations at Netaji’s ancestral house in Subhasgram, in South 24-Parganas. Secretary of the Kendra Kartik Chandra Das said the day-long programme included a symposium and a rally in which thousands participated. The district leaders of various political parties were present. A seminar was organised in the city by All India Minority Forum, where speakers condemned the “religious rigidity” of the Viswa Hindu Parishad.

Youth murdered

Tension mounted in and around Garulia, in North 24-Parganas, following the murder of Lalbabu Singh, 25. North 24-Parganas police said Lalbabu was involved in criminal activities. Adequate police force has been deployed in the area.

UP grievance cell

Resident commissioner, Uttar Pradesh, Ashok Ghosh has opened a grievance cell for people hailing from UP, where they can register complaints about problems they are facing in their place of origin. The issues will be processed through a computerised system and followed up with the authorities concerned in UP. Complaints can be lodged at 12A, Netaji Subhas Road or over phone at 22207855 and fax at 22206798.

Sit-and-draw

A sit-and-draw competition on the theme ‘service above self’, organised by Interact Club of La Martiniere, Rotary International and Life Welfare Society, was held at Park Circus on Thursday. Amala Shankar attended the event, which drew students between five and 15 years, including under-privileged kids.

Utsav venue shift

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on Thursday that the venue of Yatra Utsav had to be changed from Rabindra Kanan to Mahajati Sadan due to the financial crisis faced by the government. Bhattacharjee was speaking at a function at Mahajati Sadan on the eighth day of the Utsav.

Eviction drive

Police on Wednesday night evicted 30 stalls along Azadgarh Park, in south Calcutta. The eviction drive was conducted on the eve of the foundation stone-laying ceremony scheduled on Thursday by local legislator Pankaj Banerjee.
