Violins and vocals at global music fest

lViolin maestro L. Subramaniam and French electric violin wizard JeanLuc Ponty will feature in a concert at the CC&FC grounds on Saturday evening, presented by the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival. The duo will be supported by legendary jazz drummer Billy Cobham and bassist Guy Nsangue. Subramaniam’s daughter Seetaa and wife Kavita (Krishnamurthy) will lend their voice to the world music feast, backed by Srei International Finance Ltd. “It’s a huge honour for us to be able to bring to Calcutta such legends of world music. Initially, we had planned to hold the concert inside Allen Park on Park Street opposite our money mall, but later settled for CC&FC, since it’s a bigger venue,” said Hemant Kanoria, managing director, Srei. Subramaniam, who is touring extensively with Ponty and Cobham, had expressed his keenness to include Calcutta in his India itinerary when he last visited the city.

Cop driver run over at Gariahat

Ramnath Tewari, a 45-year-old driver with the Gariahat police station, was killed while on duty on Gariahat Road on Wednesday. Tewari, who hailed from Bihar and lived in the quarters at Alipore Bodyguard Lines on Diamond Harbour Road, had got off a police jeep when it screeched to a halt due to a mechanical snag on Gariahat Road. While Tewari was examining one of the rear wheels of the jeep, a lorry hit him from behind and sped away, police said.

Haj currency

ING Vysya Bank, the official bankers for Haj 2003, has started disbursing Saudi Riyal to Haj pilgrims at the Calcutta international airport. The city airport is one of the 12 embarkation points across the country and around 5,000 pilgrims are expected to fly to Jeddah from here.

Teacher dies

Uma Mukherjee, the first woman to top both the BA and MA exams in history at Calcutta University, died of renal failure at her Garia residence last Friday. She was 76 and had pursued academics as a career.

Launch to Math

Special launch services will be operated on January 24 between Belur and Bagbazar to mark the the 141st birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda at Belur Math, a spokesman for the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation said on Wednesday.

Benegal meets CM

Film-maker Shyam Benegal, in Calcutta to shoot a film on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at Writers’ Buildings on Wednesday. Benegal will go to Presidency jail on Thursday to shoot sequences of Netaji behind bars.

Indira statue

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will unveil the statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi opposite Birla Planetarium on January 26. He has been invited to the function by mayor Subrata Mukherjee on Wednesday.
