Anshuman in Round II

Calcutta: Qualifier Anshuman Dutta was among five Indians to make the second round of the Pepsodent-ONGC ITF junior tennis championships at the DKS. The Assam boy dismissed Shamuradov Timur, a higher-ranked Uzbekistani, 6-1, 6-3.

Local boy Rupesh Roy, the seventh seed, was also an impressive winner — 6-2, 6-3 over Korean Kim Jang-Hyuck. Top seed Chatwinder Singh overcame a nervous start to beat Korea’s Min Joon-Chung 6-4, 6-4. In the lone upset, sixth seed Siributwong Kirati of Thailand went down in three sets to Irish Tristan Farror.

In girls’ action, Thai Tang-Hong Montinee and Indian Sanaa Bhambri — the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds — breezed through. RESULTS (first round)
