Bandh over jawan’s shot at students

Behrampore, Jan. 19: All the political parties here have called a bandh in Suti and Samsergunj tomorrow in protest against a BSF jawan’s firing on a mob of students yesterday.

The jawan, Umit Singh, had slapped a student of Nimtita High School when his cycle collided with him. The Class VII student, who managed to escape to school, fell unconscious there. Angry students then gave Singh a chase and the terrified jawan opened fire, injuring a student. Another student was hurt in the melee that followed.

Aurangabad MLA Humayun Reza said people in the border areas are angry with the jawans. Allegations of harassing women against the BSF jawans in the region are common. “They often raid the villages and force the men to the barracks. After confining them there, they return to harass the women,” said Reza.

Five primary schools in Charbinpara and Charlabangola under Bhagabangola police station were shut today to protest “BSF atrocities” on teachers.
