AG report on selloff likely by Monday

New Delhi, Jan. 16: Attorney general Soli Sorabjee is likely to submit a report of his opinion on privatisation of oil PSUs — HPCL and BPCL — on Monday after going through the clarification he had sought from disinvestment minister Arun Shourie.

He said here today that he had sought detailed clarifications from Shourie on issues related to divesting the government’s stake in Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

Sorabjee told newspersons that he would be able to form an opinion on whether there was a need to repeal the law which nationalised Esso into HPCl in order to sell the government stake to a strategic investor only after seeing the ministry’s clarifications.

The attorney general is known to have sought from disinvestment ministry some papers, including memorandum of association of HPCL and BPCL which the government had acquired in the seventies.
