Writing was on the wall: Bhowmick

Calcutta: East Bengal suffered their second defeat this season in Wednesday’s IFA Shield match against Churchill Brothers. They had earlier lost to MEG, Bangalore in the Durand Cup in New Delhi.

Coach Subhas Bhowmick blamed it on the hectic schedule, saying it was their second match after Friday’s Durand final.

“The writing was on the wall. You can’t defy science and keep doing well despite playing virtually every other day. Injuries are bound to occur and already we are in pretty bad shape. Most of my reserve players are unfit.”

Coach Bhowmick has been voicing his displeasure over playing in the IFA Shield all these days since most of his first choice players are either injured or doing national duty in the SAFF Cup in Dhaka. “And you still expect us to win every match'”

The final, meanwhile, has been shifted back to January 22 (Wednesday). It was scheduled to be held two days earlier but the President’s trip to the city — which prompted the police to refuse permission for the final — has forced the change.
