Panel appeal to missing woman

lThe Women’s Commission (WC) has made an appeal to the elusive woman and her companion to come forward and help the police in their investigation against the constables charged with the murder of traffic sergeant Bapi Sen. A WC spokesperson said the commission would take all necessary steps to protect the identity of the woman. Earlier, police commissioner Sujoy Chakraborty had made a similar request, which did not yield any result. The police have already pressed charges against the five constables.

Water reservoir for Jadavpur

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will inaugurate a water reservoir at Garfa on February 16. The project was jointly commissioned by the CMDA and the CMC and will cater to about four lakh residents in the Jadavpur area. The project was completed at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore. Municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya and mayor Subrata Mukherjee were among those who visited the site on Wednesday.

Haj flights

Air-India will fly special flights to Jeddah from the city for Haj pilgrims. In all, 6,560 passengers are scheduled to fly to Jeddah, January 20 onwards. A Boeing 747 will take 410 passengers to Jeddah daily for 16 days.

Train cancelled

Due to the late running of the Down train because of dense fog, 2303 Up Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express via Patna has been cancelled on January 17, Eastern Railway sources said.

Held for car theft

One person was arrested for stealing a car late on Sunday from the Kalindi area. Police said the car was taken to a remote village in Hooghly district. It was traced on Wednesday and brought back to the city. Laltu Das, a resident of Lake Town, was arrested in connection with the theft.

Matador stolen

Three miscreants escaped with a Matador from Gouribari Lane under the Burtolla police station on Wednesday morning. Police said the miscreants, armed with sharp weapons, beat up the driver and made off with the vehicle.

Military honour

The Vishist Seva Medal was awarded to Commandant (prov) S.S. Chahar, BSF (HQ), South Bengal, on Wednesday at Fort William for “outstanding performance in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir”. He had earlier received the Police Medal.

Metro suicide

Metro Rail services from Chandni Chowk to Dum Dum were affected for about 50 minutes on Wednesday night after a 60-year old unidentified man committed suicide at Chandni Chowk station. The incident occurred at 8.56 pm. However, there was no disruption in services from Dum Dum to Tollygunge, Metro Railway sources said.
