Pune: Fancied Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) and Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) stormed into the quarter finals of both the men and womenís sections of the 64th senior national and inter-state table tennis championships.
The pre-quarter finals saw Maharashtra menís A team and Maharashtra womenís B team fight back from brink of defeat to squeeze into the quarter finals. The other teams had an easy passage into the last eight stage in the championship in Balewadi, near here.
The Maharashtra menís A team ended the challenge of Delhi (3-2) in a nail-biting finish, even while their B team went down tamely to Andhra Pradesh by a 1-3 margin. In what could be termed as the most keenly fought round in the team championship today, Maharashtra A, thanks to the tenacity and temperament displayed by Bhushan Thakur, turned stark defeat into a glorious victory over Delhi. Bhushan conquered Himanshu Kala 15-13, 7-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9.
The Maharashtra A team will now meet holders RSPB, who accounted for Rajasthan 3-0. PSPB downed Gujarat by an identical margin to set up a clash against Andhra Pradesh in the quarter finals.
Earlier, Maharashtra A and B teams won in womenís pre-quarter final. Maharashtra B team, which had finished in the third spot in last nationals, squeezed past Karnataka (3-2) while the A team registered a facile (3-0) win over Chandigarh in the other pre-quarter final match. (PTI)
