Boy’s death backlash on hospital

Calcutta, Jan. 7: The emergency ward of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital was ransacked this evening by a section of its employees following the death of a boy after a painkiller was injected.

Shiv Kumar Ram (13), whose father Biswanath Ram works in the microbiology department of the medical college, was admitted to the hospital on January 5 after he injured his leg while playing. Hospital sources said he went into a coma this afternoon, half-an-hour after the injection was given.

Hospital superintendent Kusum Kumar Adhikari announced that an inquiry committee will probe the cause of death and file a report in seven days. But agitated employees demanded a report by tomorrow.

“Shiv Kumar died due to cardio respiratory failure at 5 pm today,” Adhikari said. “I have ordered an inquiry.”

Biswanath said his son spoke to his relatives in the morning and “was normal till the painkiller was injected”.

Restive relatives and a section of the employees, mostly Group-D staff, barged into the emergency ward, burnt records and broke glass doors.
