Bhupathi trips at first hurdle

Chennai, Dec. 28 (PTI): Mahesh Bhupathi was upset by Rishi Sridhar 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 on a day when the Indian challenge almost ended in the qualifying rounds of the ATP Tata Open Saturday.

Mustafa Ghouse and Vishal Uppal were the other two among the 12 Indians to reach the second round, but they too fell against tougher opponents. In the first round, Uppal and Ghouse defeated the Amritraj cousins, Stephen (Anandís son) and Vikram (Vijayís son).

Sridhar plays Thomas Behrend of Germany in his second round match Sunday. Davis Cupper Harsh Mankad put up resistance against third seeded German Bjorn Phau, but eventually lost 3-6, 7-5, 4-6.

Canas gets top billing

Defending champion Guillermo Canas of Argentina has been seeded No.1. He will be up against Paradorn Srichaphan, Sjeng Schalken and Mark Philippousis.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi will take part with Czech Republicís David Riki and Australian Tood Woodbridge, respectively. Meanwhile, all the three wild cards have been issued to Indians ó Paes, Rohan Bopanna and Prakash Amritraj, son of Vijay Amritraj.
