Junior meet at South Club

Calcutta, Dec. 28: The Mint-O junior tennis championship, organised by Akhtar Ali, will be held at Calcutta South Club from Wednesday.

This AITA ranking tournament will be a four-day affair. The qualifiers will be held on Monday and Tuesday.

The response to the meet has been overwhelming, in excess of 350 till date, said Ali at a press conference on Saturday.

Anshuman Dutta and V.S. Srihari will be the top seeds in the boys under-18 and under-14 events, respectively. The girls challenge will be led by Priyanka Parekh (under-18) and Parija Maloo (under-14).

Alan, Rupesh best

Gujarat’s Alan Gomes and Calcutta’s Rupesh Roy won the boys under-14 and under-16 titles respectively, in the Adhip Mukerjea memorial AITA junior tennis meet on Saturday.

The girls titles went to Shalini Sahoo (under-14) of SAI Delhi and Assam’s Varsha Dutta (under-16).

In the final, Gomes beat Agnel Gladwin Peter 6-3, 6-2 while Rupesh sailed past Allan Moses 6-3, 6-0. Shalini beat Taskeen Bains 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Varsha won against Shivika Burman 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
