Bengal girls lose to TN in final

Chennai: Tamil Nadu shocked Bengal 3-2 to clinch the girls’ team title in the BSNL 64th junior national and inter-state table tennis championships Thursday. PSCB Academy lived up to their top billing by overcoming Tamil Nadu 3-1 in the boys’ final.

Bengal drew first blood in the girls’ final as Mousumi Pal dismissed S. Sangeetha 11-6, 14-12, 17-15. M. Aparna restored parity in style, routing Sayantika Kundu 11-9, 11-1, 11-4.

Anushree Saha made it 2-1 for Bengal with a convincing 11-9, 11-9, 13-11 win over Swarna. Aparna pushed the final to a fifth rubber following a hard-fought 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 11-6 win over Mousumi.

The decider was a nail-biting affair. Sangeetha fought back to level scores after Sayantika had claimed the first two games. The players went neck and neck in the fifth game before the local girl ultimately won 9-11, 11-13, 11-4, 11-8, 12-10.

In the boys’ final, Arunava Ganguly won both his matches — against R. Abhishek and A. Rajath Kamal.
