Freebies for mobile users

New Delhi, Dec. 26: On the eve of the launch of Reliance Infocomm's limited mobility service, cellular operators took pre-emptive steps to retain their customers by doling out freebies. The two mobile cellular operators in Delhi — Bharti’s AirTel and Batata's Idea — are offering an additional free airtime worth Rs 50 and Rs 100 respectively, to prepaid subscribers who renew their account by December 27.

A senior executive in Hutch, AirTel’s leading competitor in Delhi said, “We want our subscribers to get a feel of the new service and compare it with the one available to them. We are yet to announce any such scheme.”

While refusing to accept that the company has initiated the scheme to retain its customers, an AirTel spokesperson said, “AirTel had recently run a contest on theme Bollywood. The winners walked away with VCDs, T-shirt and caps. As a consolation prize, we have announced free airtime worth Rs 50 for a select few customers if they recharge before December 27. This is to help the company load the free airtime on the subscriber's card by the end of the month.”
