Fruit body chief killed in city

Calcutta, Dec. 25: Haji Taj Mohammed, the president of the Calcutta Fruit Merchantsí Association, was shot and stabbed to death on Wednesday night while he was in the middle of a meeting with his colleagues.

Mohammad was also associated with sports clubs Mohammedan Sporting and George Telegraph.

The murder occurred on Ballav Das Road in Jorasanko, deputy commissioner of police (Central) Z. Hassan said.

Quoting eyewitnesses, police said four armed youths burst into the room and fired at Mohammad. Before leaving, the assailants stabbed him repeatedly, the police said.

Members of the association and residents put up a road block but lifted it after police promised immediate action.

Train collision averted

Alert pointman Anil Garai saved hundreds of lives when he spotted two local trains running on the same track through dense fog at Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas and waved a red flag to bring one to a halt.

The Up Kakdwip local was rushing towards Nishchindapur station around 7.56 am on the same track where the down train stood, ready to leave.
