Town, for sale

A real estate company here is offering the deed to Playas, New Mexico, complete with a view of the mountains on 1,800 acres, with 259 homes, 25 apartments, a community centre and a six-lane bowling alley, featuring a snack bar.

Not to mention its own post office, bank, fire station, medical centre, two churches, a rodeo arena and an airstrip.

A former company town, Playas was all but abandoned in September 1999, when Phelps Dodge Corp shut its copper smelter about 16 km away.
