Waqar certain to lead in World Cup: Zia

Rawalpindi, Dec. 21 (AFP): Waqar Younis is certain to retain Pakistan’s captaincy in the World Cup, the country’s cricket chief announced Saturday.

“I have no doubts in my mind that Waqar will lead Pakistan in next year’s World Cup,” PCB chief Lt Gen. Tauqir Zia said.

Media reports in Pakistan had suggested Waqar would lose his captaincy after the team’s 1-4 loss in the one-day series to South Africa which ended earlier this week. Wasim Akram was tipped to take over and to challenge a match-fixing inquiry’s recommendation that he should be barred from leading the team.

Fazle as reinforcement

Pace bowler Fazle Akbar is to fly to South Africa as reinforcement for the injury-stricken Pakistan team ahead of their two-match Test series there, officials said on Saturday.
