GRP men stabbed on platform

Alipurduar Dec. 21: Two Government Railway Police constables were killed last night by two miscreants, while they were on duty at the railway station here.

Constable Hemanta Barman, 35, died after being admitted to the Alipurduar sub-divisional hospital, while Nripen Barman, 42, succumbed on the way to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri.

The incident took place around 10.30 pm at the New Alipurduar station. The two constables were on platform No. 2 when the miscreants stabbed them from behind.

Railway Police Force personnel, alerted by the cries of the constables, chased the militants but failed to apprehend them.

Siliguri GRP superintendent Shashikanta Pujari said investigations are being conducted but no one has been arrested as yet.

The police official ruled out the involvement of any militant group but said smugglers could be responsible for the attack.

The constables had seized 5 kg of marijuana from the Delhi-bound train last evening and arrested two persons, he pointed out.
