Kala azar in Birbhum

Rampurhat, Dec. 18: Nine cases of kala azar or the black fever, an insect-borne disease, have been detected in Birbhum district, bordering Jharkhand, health services officials said.

The cases have been reported from blocks like Murarai, Paikar and Rajnagar. Four infected tribal children from Murarai have been admitted to the sub-divisional hospital here, said district chief medical officer Parthasarathi Chowdhury.

Seven others from the same area, under treatment in Murarai, are also suspected to be infected as they are showing the same symptoms.
