Harikrishna in joint lead

Panaji: GM P. Harikrishna marched his way to joint lead Sunday with a marathon victory over Stefan Kristjansson of Iceland in the eighth round of the 41st world junior chess championship.

Harikrishna shares the lead with Levon Aronian of Armenia and Russians Dimitry Jakovenko and Timofeev Artyom with six points apiece. A group of seven, including Surya Shekhar Ganguly, follow half a point behind.

The Indian boys generally had a good day with Prathmesh Mokal carving out a fine victory over Sergei Azarov of Belarus and S. Poobesh Anand beating Jirka Jiri of the Czech Republic. GM norm holder Sandipan Chanda went down to R. Wojtaszek of Poland.

In the girls meet, WGM Zhao Xue of China stretched her lead over Koneru Humpy to a full point with a victory over Natalia Pogonina of Russia in the eighth round.

Tania Sachdev and D. Harika were on the receiving end in this round and went down to Elmira Hasanova of Russia and Eva Moser of Poland, respectively.
