Students ill after meat lunch at hostel

Durgapur, Dec. 15: Twenty-five students of a high school at Dinanathpur in the Auspur police station area of Burdwan fell ill yesterday after lunch at the hostel.

The hostel in-charge of Purbapanduk High School and the cook have been detained.

The students were admitted to the local health centre when they started vomiting and complained of stomachache soon after the lunch comprising the usual Saturday fare of meat.

The condition of Sidhu Hembram, a Class VII student, was said to be critical. “Two doctors have rushed to the health centre with medical teams,” said the district’s chief medical officer of health, S.S. Sarangi. Food specimens have been sent for tests.

Police said hostel in-charge Abdul Khoyer and Durgapada Pathak, the cook, had skipped the lunch.

Students, mostly tribals, come to the school from all parts of the district and outside.
