Barcelona tie rained off

Barcelona: Barcelona’s Champions League game at home to Newcastle United on Tuesday was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, Uefa said.

Uefa spokesman Mike Lee said the decision had been taken after the referee took a final look at the pitch with roughly 90 minutes to go before the scheduled 1945 GMT kick-off.

“It’s been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch,” Lee said. “It will be rescheduled next week, on Tuesday or Wednesday. That decision will be made Wednesday.” The game had been given the go-ahead after an afternoon inspection.

Beckham set to return

Meanwhile, midfielder David Beckham has recovered from fractured ribs and could make his eagerly-awaited comeback in Wednesday’s clash against Deportivo, club officials said Tuesday.

“David is back in the squad, although whether he starts or not against Deportivo will be a decision for the manager,” United’s assistant manager Carlos Queiroz said.
