Mukesh starts favourite

Calcutta: Mukesh Kumar starts favourite in the Rs 8 lakh Noida Open beginning at the par-72 Noida Golf Course Tuesday. This is the 15th leg of the Hero Honda Golf Tour.

According to information received here, some of the other big names in fray are Arjun Singh, Harmeet Kahlon, Vijay Kumar, Firoze Ali, Gaurav Ghei, Uttam Singh Mundy and Digvijay Singh.

The met kicks off with a Pro-Am event to be played Tuesday and the tournament proper begins on the next day. It offers a winner’s purse of R2 1,29,600.

Mukesh, having a dream season, is expectedly upbeat. “I am playing the best golf of my career,” said the 36-year old from Mhow who has a phenomenal record this season, with seven wins, three runner-up finishes and one third-place finish in 13 starts. His earnings this year are already touching the 14-lakh mark.

“It is going to be an interesting week, with all the Asian PGA Tour stars competing. This is a big occasion and I would like to prove my supremacy by beating the best in Asia. The Noida Golf Course is my favourite venue and I have a win here at the Padampat Singhania Open last year,” said Mukesh, winner of last week’s Tata Steel Open.

Vijay, who recently made his first cut overseas, at the $ 1.5 million BMW Asian Open, is another player to have done well here. Another challenger is defending champion Vivek Bhandari.
