Twin runover deaths across city

Teenager Bapi Sheet and 55-year-old Bal Bahadur Chettri were killed in accidents on Sunday. Bapi, a rickshaw-pullerís son, was hit by a lorry at Regent Park while he was cycling down the road with friends. The driver of the lorry was arrested and the vehicle impounded. Chettri was crossing the road when a bus, trying to overtake a car, crushed him in front of Jagat cinema. He was taken to Nilratan Sirkar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Child knocked down by taxi

Five-year-old Puja Majhi was knocked down by a taxi at the Beleghata Main Road-Canal East Road intersection on Saturday shortly after noon while crossing the road. She was admitted to NRS Hospital, where her condition is critical. Police arrested the driver and impounded his vehicle.

Mob fury

Rash driving led to bystanders pelting stones at a private bus on route 24A/1 on No 4 bridge on Saturday and beating up the driver and conductors. The vehicle's windscreen was smashed. The driver and his help were arrested and the bus impounded.

Shops gutted

Four shops were gutted at Shyampur, in Howrah, late on Sunday. The fire broke out in a grocery shop.

Resettlement row

A group of local traders blocked NSC Bose Road at Garia for about an hour on Sunday, demanding resettlement of their shops, which will have to be demolished for the Metro Railway extension project.

Shot dead

Debesh Bhowmik, 30, was shot dead by a group at New Barrackpore on Saturday night. Police said Debesh was involved in a number of anti-social activities. No arrests have been made so far.
